Description
Viewed laterally, the male L1 vertebra is centered on a thick, kidney-shaped vertebral body anteriorly, with a stout pedicle projecting posteriorly to join the lamina and complete the vertebral arch. Superior and inferior articular processes rise and descend at the junction of pedicle and lamina, their facet surfaces oriented to meet the adjacent T12 and L2 zygapophysial joints. A transverse process extends laterally from the pedicle region, while the spinous process projects posteriorly and slightly inferiorly. Bone texture and cortical margins are rendered with the sort of irregularity you expect in a dry bone specimen. Short and clear. For teaching and clinical correlation, L1 sits at the thoracolumbar junction where kyphosis transitions to lordosis, a biomechanical inflection point that concentrates stress during axial loading. That matters when you are discussing burst fractures, flexion distraction injuries, or pedicle-based fixation, because pedicle diameter and trajectory at L1 govern screw selection and safe placement relative to the vertebral canal.
