Centered in an anterior view, the L1 vertebral body dominates the composition with its broad, kidney shaped anterior surface and a gently concave superior and inferior endplate for the intervertebral discs. Laterally, the pedicles lead into the roots of the transverse processes, with the vertebral arch receding posteriorly so the vertebral foramen and spinous process sit mostly out of sight. At the posterolateral margins, the superior articular processes and their facet surfaces are suggested by smooth contours that will meet the inferior facets of T12 above. Short, stout proportions distinguish L1 from thoracic vertebrae. L1 sits at the thoracolumbar junction, where sagittally oriented lumbar zygapophysial (facet) joints and the larger vertebral body reflect the shift from rib bearing thoracic mechanics to load transmission into the lumbar spine.
