Description
Oriented from an inferior perspective, the L2 vertebra is presented with the inferior endplate of the vertebral body prominent and its posterior margin forming the anterior boundary of the vertebral foramen. Laterally, the transverse processes project to either side, while the laminae converge posteriorly toward the base of the spinous process. The inferior articular processes sit posterolaterally at the junction of pedicle and lamina, their facets facing mostly laterally to engage the superior articular facets of L3. Trabecular texture on the endplate and cancellous bone is emphasized. Seeing L2 from below clarifies the geometry of the zygapophysial (facet) joints in the upper lumbar spine, where sagittal orientation permits flexion and extension but constrains rotation. That relationship becomes practical during lumbar medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation, since the target nerves course around the junction of the transverse process and superior articular process of the adjacent level, and bony landmarks can be misread if you do not have the inferior surface and pedicle contours in mind. Endplate morphology also matters. Irregularity or depression here correlates with Schmorl nodes and endplate fracture patterns in axial loading injuries. Use this plate in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules to teach lumbar vertebra identification and level specific differences, or in radiology and spine surgery texts to support explanations of axial CT anatomy, facet arthropathy, and posterior approaches such as laminectomy planning at upper lumbar levels.
