Description
Oriented from an inferior aspect, the first lumbar vertebra (L1) is presented with the vertebral body lying anteriorly and the vertebral arch forming a posterior ring around the vertebral foramen. Paired pedicles lead posterolaterally to the transverse processes, while the laminae converge posteriorly toward the base of the spinous process. Inferior articular processes project caudally from the junction of lamina and pedicle, their inferior articular facets facing mostly laterally with a slight anterior tilt typical of the lumbar zygapophysial joints. Clear bony geometry. L1 sits at the thoracolumbar junction, so its facet orientation matters when you teach or evaluate coupled motion between the more coronally oriented thoracic facets and the more sagittal lumbar facets. That transition helps explain why flexion extension mechanics dominate in the upper lumbar spine, yet rotational stiffness increases compared with the thoracic region. Clinically, inferior facet morphology and the L1 to L2 zygapophysial joint line become relevant when discussing facet arthropathy, post-traumatic malalignment, or planning medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation, where needle trajectory is guided by the relationship of the articular processes to the transverse process and lamina. Faculty commonly place this view alongside superior views to clarify how the inferior articular facets of L1 articulate with the superior articular facets of L2, and to introduce the boundaries of the vertebral foramen in an anatomy or orthopaedic spine module. It also fits well in radiology and pain medicine teaching files that correlate osseous landmarks with oblique lumbar CT, fluoroscopic facet injections, or cadaveric dissection photos of the posterior elements at the thoracolumbar region.
