Description
Oriented from an inferior perspective, the C7 vertebra presents the vertebral body anteriorly with the vertebral foramen centered posterior to it, bounded by the pedicles and laminae. Laterally, the transverse processes project to either side, with the transverse foramina visible near their bases, a cervical hallmark even when the foramen is reduced at C7. Posterolaterally, the inferior articular facets face inferiorly and slightly anteriorly to meet the superior facets of T1, while the inferior vertebral notch forms a shallow concavity along the inferior border of each pedicle. A short, broad spinous process sits posteriorly in the midline, often more prominent at this level. C7, the vertebra prominens, matters because it marks the transition from the mobile cervical spine to the stiffer thoracic segment and because its inferior vertebral notch contributes to the intervertebral foramen for the C8 spinal nerve, a level frequently implicated in cervical radiculopathy. The inferior view clarifies the facet orientation at C7 to T1, a junction relevant in lower cervical fixation and in understanding why motion and load transfer change abruptly across the cervicothoracic junction. Small details count. The morphology of the transverse foramen is also clinically read alongside variant vertebral artery courses, since the artery commonly enters the foramina at C6 rather than C7.
