Description
Anteriorly, the vertebral body of C6 forms a broad platform, bounded laterally by the uncinate processes that rise along the superior endplate. Posterior to the body, the vertebral foramen opens centrally, framed by the pedicles and laminae, while the superior articular facets sit posterolaterally, oriented to receive the inferior facets of C5. Each transverse process projects laterally and encloses a transverse foramen, with the anterior and posterior tubercles flanking its rim. Landmarks read cleanly in this superior perspective. C6 matters because it is a frequent reference point for both surface anatomy and operative planning in the lower cervical spine. The carotid tubercle (anterior tubercle of the C6 transverse process) is a classic landmark for temporary compression of the common carotid artery and for level confirmation during anterior cervical approaches, where wrong-level surgery remains a real risk. The transverse foramina also anchor the discussion of vertebral artery anatomy, including variants in which the artery enters at C5 or C4 rather than the usual C6, a detail that influences lateral decompression and instrumentation.
