Description
Viewed from superior, the seventh cervical vertebra (C7, vertebra prominens) presents a broad vertebral body anteriorly and a triangular vertebral foramen posterior to it, bounded by stout pedicles and laminae. Laterally, the transverse processes project to either side, and the transverse foramina appear smaller and more slit-like than in C3 to C6, reflecting the usual exclusion of the vertebral artery at this level. Posterior elements converge toward the base of the long spinous process, while the superior articular processes sit posterolateral to the vertebral foramen, their facets oriented to meet C6. C7 matters because it is the junctional vertebra between the mobile cervical spine and the thoracic spine, so its facet orientation and posterior elements become key landmarks when teaching cervicothoracic mechanics and when planning posterior approaches. The small transverse foramen is a practical anatomical point in spine surgery and interventional procedures, since the vertebral artery typically enters the transverse foramen at C6, while C7 more often transmits the vertebral vein and sympathetic fibers, with anatomic variants that can affect screw trajectory and risk. Palpation also starts here. The prominent spinous process of C7 is the common surface landmark used to count cervical levels in trauma and preoperative localization.
