Description
Profile view of an adult male cranium presents the frontal bone anteriorly, parietal bone superiorly, and occipital bone posteriorly, with the coronal and lambdoid sutures tracing their junctions. Inferior to the parietal, the squamous part of the temporal bone forms the lateral wall of the middle cranial fossa region, and the zygomatic process sweeps anteriorly to meet the zygomatic bone in the zygomatic arch. Anterior to the temporal bone, the greater wing of the sphenoid occupies the pterion area, bordered by frontal, parietal, and temporal bones, while the maxilla and nasal aperture outline the midface. The mandible is absent. Clean margins make that obvious. Sphenoid and temporal relationships matter because they concentrate surgical corridors and injury patterns into a small patch of bone. The pterion overlies the anterior division of the middle meningeal artery, so a lateral blow in this region can produce an epidural hematoma even when the external fracture line looks modest. For skull base teaching, the greater wing of the sphenoid and squamous temporal bone also frame landmarks used when discussing pterional craniotomy planning, the temporalis muscle footprint, and the proximity of the external acoustic meatus and temporomandibular joint region, even when the jaw itself is removed for clarity. Neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses use this lateral skull without the mandible to isolate cranial vault sutures, the zygomatic arch, and the pterion without distraction from the dentition and occlusal plane. It also fits atlases and operative manuals that need a clean lateral bony reference for trauma diagrams, burr hole orientation, or surface marking of the middle meningeal artery territory.
