Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of the right cerebral hemisphere, the posterior pole of the occipital lobe is emphasized, with the sulcus lunatus outlined along the superolateral convexity near the occipital cortex. Surrounding gyri and sulci of the lateral surface frame the marked groove, while the cerebellum lies posteroinferior to the occipital lobe and the brainstem descends inferiorly and slightly anterior to the cerebellum. The sulcus lunatus sits posterior to the parietal and temporal opercular regions and corresponds to cortex bordering the calcarine region on the medial surface, even though the calcarine sulcus itself is not directly visible laterally. For teaching neuroanatomy, the sulcus lunatus matters because it is a variable landmark tied to occipital organization and discussions of primary visual cortex. Its presence and prominence differ across individuals, and it is less consistent than fixed sulci such as the central sulcus, which makes it a good example when you are cautioning learners against overreliance on minor cortical grooves for localization.
