Description
Prominent on the lateral surface of a single cerebral hemisphere, the sulcus lateralis (Sylvian fissure) is highlighted as a deep cleft coursing posterosuperiorly from the anterior perforated region toward the posterior parietal cortex. Superior to the fissure lie the inferior frontal gyrus anteriorly and the inferior parietal lobule posteriorly, while the superior temporal gyrus forms the temporal operculum immediately inferior to the fissure. The occipital lobe occupies the posterior pole of the hemisphere, with the cerebellum positioned posteroinferiorly and the brainstem descending inferiorly from the diencephalic region. One landmark dominates the scene. Orientation to the lateral sulcus matters because it frames the opercular anatomy overlying the insula and marks the corridor to the middle cerebral artery within the Sylvian cistern, a common route in microneurosurgical approaches and a frequent site of subarachnoid blood tracking after aneurysmal rupture. It also anchors functional teaching: Broca areas (pars opercularis and pars triangularis) sit just anterosuperior to the anterior ramus, and the primary auditory cortex occupies the superior temporal plane deep to the posterior fissure. For stroke localization, the relationship of peri-Sylvian cortex to the MCA territory is hard to beat. Use this lateral brain view when you need a clean reference for neuroanatomy lectures on lobar boundaries, opercula, and peri-Sylvian language networks, or for neurosurgery and neuroradiology materials discussing MCA aneurysms, temporal lobe approaches, and cortical infarct patterns on CT or MRI.
