Description
Viewed laterally, the cuboid sits on the lateral column of the midfoot, distal to the calcaneus and proximal to the bases of the fourth and fifth metatarsals. Superiorly it articulates with the talus and anterior calcaneus region by way of the calcaneocuboid joint, while medially it meets the lateral cuneiform and often the navicular at the level of the transverse tarsal (midtarsal) complex. The calcaneus forms the posterior heel, the talus lies superoposterior to the navicular, and the metatarsals and phalanges extend anteriorly in line with the forefoot rays. Bony contours are clear. For teaching biomechanics, the lateral view clarifies how the cuboid functions as a keystone for the lateral longitudinal arch and a stable platform for load transfer into the lateral metatarsals during stance and push-off. The plantar aspect of the cuboid commonly bears the groove and ridge for the tendon of fibularis (peroneus) longus as it turns medially toward the first metatarsal and medial cuneiform, a relationship that becomes clinically relevant in lateral midfoot pain, tendon irritation, and after inversion injuries. The calcaneocuboid joint line is also a practical landmark when discussing Chopart joint sprains and midfoot fracture dislocations.
