Oriented to the plantar (inferior) surface of the left foot, the lateral cuneiform (os cuneiforme laterale) is presented as a wedge-shaped tarsal bone in the distal row, lying distal to the navicular and proximal to the base of the third metatarsal. Medially it approaches the intermediate cuneiform, while laterally its prominent articular facet meets the cuboid at the lateral cuneocuboid articulation. The plantar aspect appears narrower than the dorsal surface, consistent with the cuneiform’s role in maintaining the transverse arch. Small but diagnostic. Attention to the inferior surface matters because many learners only encounter the cuneiforms from dorsal views, then struggle to translate that knowledge into plantar surgical anatomy and radiographic interpretation.
