Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male cranium and viscerocranium are rendered with the temporal, parietal, frontal, zygomatic, and sphenoid contributions forming the lateral wall of the skull, while the squamous temporal bone lies inferior to the parietal bone across the squamous suture. A focal depressed fracture involves the temporal bone superior to the external acoustic meatus, in the region posterior to the zygomatic process and immediately adjacent to the mandibular fossa, where the mandibular condyle articulates to form the temporomandibular joint. The mandible occupies the inferior facial skeleton with a clear body, angle, ramus, and coronoid process, and upper and lower dentition align anterior to the TMJ. A depression fracture in this location is not an academic finding. The thin squamous temporal bone overlies the middle cranial fossa, and impact here raises concern for epidural hematoma from injury to the middle meningeal artery as it courses deep to the pterion region, as well as associated temporal bone fracture patterns that may extend toward the external auditory canal. Proximity to the TMJ also matters: trauma that drives bone inward can coexist with condylar fractures, intra-articular hemarthrosis, or later ankylosis, and even when the mandible is intact, malocclusion and trismus can be the first functional clues. Teaching teams use this lateral skull view to discuss sutural anatomy, pterion-related trauma, and the surface landmarks that guide initial evaluation in head injury, alongside TMJ biomechanics and mandibular fracture assessment in dental and maxillofacial curricula. It also fits well in emergency medicine and neurosurgery materials illustrating why temporal impacts receive a low threshold for CT and why jaw function should be checked during secondary survey.
