Description
Positioned circumferentially around the orbital rim, the orbicularis oculi is highlighted in lateral profile with clear separation of its orbital portion from the palpebral portion within the eyelids. The muscle lies superficial to the bony orbit formed by the frontal bone, zygomatic bone, and maxilla, with the lateral orbital margin and zygomatic arch providing firm osseous reference points. Posterior to the facial skeleton, the cranial vault and its sutures remain visible, and inferiorly the mandible and maxillary dentition anchor the midface in relation to the periorbital soft tissues. Cervical vertebrae C1 through C7 appear in continuity beneath the occiput, establishing head and neck orientation. Lateral anatomy of orbicularis oculi matters because eyelid closure is both a protective reflex and a clinical endpoint, and the palpebral fibers behave differently from the thicker orbital fibers during blinking, squinting, and forced closure.
