Description
Seen in left lateral profile beneath the thin eyelid skin, the orbicularis oculi forms a concentric sphincter around the palpebral fissure, with palpebral fibers confined to the upper and lower lids and the thicker orbital part sweeping onto the lateral orbital rim. Medially, the muscle blends toward the medial palpebral ligament and lacrimal region, while laterally it approaches the lateral palpebral raphe at the canthus. Superiorly the fibers sit just inferior to the superciliary region, and inferiorly they drape onto the upper cheek over the zygomatic area. Bone landmarks of the orbit and adjacent skull contour orient the soft tissues. Function follows form here: palpebral orbicularis closes the eyelids gently for blinking, while the orbital part produces forceful closure and contributes to tear distribution across the cornea. This lateral view clarifies why injury or surgical disruption near the lateral canthus can alter lid apposition and blink mechanics, a practical concern in lateral canthotomy and cantholysis for acute orbital compartment syndrome. It also supports teaching of facial nerve (temporal and zygomatic branches) relationships, where iatrogenic neuropraxia can present as incomplete eyelid closure and exposure keratopathy.
