Description
Centered on the anterior skull, paired orbicularis oculi muscles form concentric loops encircling each orbital aperture. The palpebral part lies medially within the eyelids, while the thicker orbital part extends onto the margins of the orbit, draping over the frontal bone superiorly and the zygomatic and maxillary bones laterally and inferiorly. Medially, the muscle fibers converge toward the lacrimal region adjacent to the nasal bones and the anterior lacrimal crest. Surrounding bony landmarks include the frontal bone superiorly, the nasal bones at the midline, the maxilla inferior to the orbit, and the zygomatic bone laterally; maxillary dentition and the superior cervical vertebrae appear inferiorly for orientation. Clear landmarks. Orbicularis oculi anatomy matters when you need to explain eyelid closure mechanics and the lacrimal pump. Contraction of the palpebral portion produces gentle blinking, whereas the orbital portion drives forceful closure, a distinction that becomes clinically concrete in facial nerve (CN VII) palsy, where incomplete eyelid closure risks exposure keratopathy and disrupts tear drainage. The medial canthal fibers near the lacrimal sac also provide a practical map for avoiding iatrogenic injury during dacryocystorhinostomy or repair of medial eyelid lacerations. Faculty can drop this figure directly into head and neck anatomy lectures to anchor surface anatomy around the orbit, or into ophthalmology and oculoplastics teaching when discussing lagophthalmos, ectropion, and tear outflow physiology.
