Description
Situated in the midline of the telencephalon, the septum pellucidum appears as a thin, translucent membrane spanning between the corpus callosum superiorly and the fornix inferiorly, forming the medial wall of the anterior horns (frontal horns) of the lateral ventricles. A lateral perspective typically places the genu and body of the corpus callosum as the dominant superior arch, with the cavum septi pellucidi, when present, lying between the two laminae of the septum. Posteriorly, the septal laminae relate to the columns and body of the fornix as they course toward the diencephalon, with the thalamus and third ventricle region sitting deeper and more caudal. For teaching ventricular anatomy, this view clarifies how the septum pellucidum partitions the paired lateral ventricles anteriorly without forming a true ventricular roof or floor, a point that often confuses learners when moving between gross sections and neuroimaging. It also provides a clean setup for discussing cavum septi pellucidi and cavum vergae as developmental variants, and why a persistent, enlarged cavum can be an incidental MRI finding or, less commonly, a contributor to symptoms in the setting of adjacent mass effect or hydrocephalus.
