Description
Positioned in lateral profile, the sixth thoracic vertebra (T6) sits between T5 superiorly and T7 inferiorly, with the intervertebral discs interposed as paler cushions along the anterior column. The vertebral body forms the anterior mass, while posteriorly the pedicles and laminae frame the vertebral canal and continue into the spinous process, which slopes inferiorly as is typical in the mid thoracic spine. Along the posterolateral margin, the deep inferior vertebral notch is clearly defined beneath the pedicle, contributing to the intervertebral foramen with the superior vertebral notch of T7. Costal facets on the vertebral body and the transverse process align laterally with the adjacent rib articulation. That inferior vertebral notch is not a cosmetic contour, it is the bony roofline that helps define the neural exit corridor at this level. Foraminal stenosis in the thoracic spine is less common than in the cervical or lumbar regions, but osteophytes, facet hypertrophy, or disc height loss at T5–T6 or T6–T7 can still compromise the exiting thoracic spinal nerve, producing band-like radicular pain along the corresponding dermatome. A lateral view also clarifies how the thoracic kyphosis and the inferiorly angled spinous processes can influence posterior surgical corridors, including thoracic laminectomy planning and level localization.
