Description
Mid-thoracic anatomy is presented in lateral profile, with the T6 vertebra distinguished from adjacent thoracic levels and separated by the intervertebral discs. The vertebral body sits anteriorly while the vertebral arch and spinous process project posteriorly, producing the typical thoracic kyphosis in a healthy male spine. At T6, the transverse processes extend laterally from the pedicle-lamina junction, and their transverse costal facets (foveae costales transversales) mark the articulation with the tubercle of the sixth rib. Facets define the level. Level-specific identification at T6 matters because the thoracic spine is rib-bearing, so vertebral pain patterns and mechanical constraints differ from cervical and lumbar segments. The transverse costal facet is a frequent teaching point when you need to explain costotransverse and costovertebral joint mechanics, and it is also relevant in interpreting fractures or dislocations where rib articulation can transmit force into the posterior elements. In procedural planning, knowing the relationship between the transverse process, facet joints, and the intervertebral foramen helps when correlating axial imaging to a lateral surface landmark for thoracic paravertebral blocks or targeted injections.
