Description
Centered on the mid thoracic spine, the T6 vertebra is presented within the stacked thoracic vertebrae (T1 to T12) in lateral profile, with the intervertebral discs rendered as paler bands between adjacent vertebral bodies. T6 sits inferior to T5 and superior to T7 along the kyphotic thoracic curve, with its vertebral body anterior and its spinous process projecting posteriorly and slightly inferiorly. The superior and inferior articular processes form zygapophysial (facet) joints whose articular surfaces are oriented primarily in the coronal plane, a configuration that favors axial rotation while limiting flexion and extension. Transverse processes extend laterally toward the costotransverse articulations, aligning with the rib-bearing function of the thoracic region. Facet orientation at T6 matters. Coronal-plane thoracic facets shape normal thoracic motion and help explain the clinical pattern of mid back pain that is worse with extension and rotation, as seen in thoracic zygapophysial joint arthropathy. In trauma or osteoporosis, anterior wedge compression fractures commonly occur in the mid thoracic vertebral bodies and can accentuate kyphosis, so recognizing the anterior vertebral body contour relative to the posterior elements is key when teaching alignment and stability. Rib articulation at this level also links thoracic spinal mechanics to chest wall motion and pain referral patterns.
