Description
Centered in a posterior view of the male thoracic spine, the seventh thoracic vertebra (T7) is highlighted among adjacent mid-thoracic levels. The long, inferiorly sloping spinous process projects posteriorly in the midline, flanked laterally by the laminae and the paired transverse processes. Superior and inferior articular processes frame the zygapophysial (facet) joints above and below, while the pedicles bridge anteriorly toward the vertebral body, which is largely obscured from this rear perspective. Costal facets on the transverse processes and along the posterolateral margins of the body are implied landmarks for rib articulation at this level. T7 sits near the apex of the normal thoracic kyphosis, so its posterior elements are frequent reference points when teaching segmental anatomy and surface palpation of the mid-back. The thoracic spinous processes overlap like shingles, which is why posterior approaches to the thoracic epidural space and midline instrumentation demand careful appreciation of spinous process angulation and the interlaminar windows.
