Description
Centered in the mid-thoracic column, the seventh thoracic vertebra (T7) is isolated in blue against adjacent thoracic vertebrae and the intervening intervertebral discs. From an anterior perspective, the vertebral body dominates the view, with its superior and inferior endplates forming the margins where the disc spaces abut immediately above and below. Subtle lateral contours indicate the pedicle origins and the transition toward the transverse processes, although the posterior elements remain largely obscured from this projection. Orientation is straightforward. Superior is toward T6, inferior toward T8. Mid-thoracic level anatomy matters because it sits near the apex of thoracic kyphosis and shares the segmental load transfer between the rib-bearing thorax and the more mobile lumbar spine. Clinically, T7 is a frequent reference level when localizing vertebral compression fractures in osteoporosis or trauma, where anterior wedging of the vertebral body can be appreciated on lateral radiographs but is best understood when you can first anchor the normal anterior body profile and disc spacing. The anterior vertebral body is also the structure reconstituted in corpectomy and anterior column reconstruction, where endplate preservation and adjacent disc integrity influence cage selection and subsidence risk.
