Description

Centered in an anterior view of the male thoracic spine, the T10 vertebral body sits inferior to T9 and superior to T11, separated by the T9 to T10 and T10 to T11 intervertebral discs. The cylindrical centrum forms most of the visible bone, with the pedicles projecting posterolaterally toward the vertebral arch and the transverse processes extending laterally. Near each pedicle, a single complete costal facet (fovea costalis) is shown, positioned to receive the head of the tenth rib. Adjacent thoracic vertebrae appear stacked above and below to clarify level and alignment. T10 is a transition level in the lower thoracic region, where rib articulation and vertebral morphology begin to resemble the upper lumbar pattern, and that makes the full costal facet a useful landmark when you are counting levels on radiographs or correlating with surface anatomy. Clinically, accurate identification of T10 matters in thoracic epidural placement, posterior instrumentation planning, and in trauma patterns such as wedge compression fractures that commonly affect the thoracolumbar junction, where mislabeling one level can shift an operative target. A small structure, a big consequence. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and osteology teaching to contrast typical mid-thoracic vertebrae with the lower thoracic transitional vertebrae, and in spine surgery or radiology publications that need a clean anterior reference for thoracic vertebral level designation and rib head articulation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
