Description
Centered in an anterior perspective, the seventh thoracic vertebra (T7) is presented with the vertebral body dominating the field, its anterior surface gently convex and wider transversely than anteroposteriorly. From the posterolateral margins of the body, the pedicles lead back toward the vertebral arch and the vertebral foramen, while transverse processes project laterally and slightly posteriorly. Superior and inferior vertebral notches shape the intervertebral foramina when articulated with adjacent levels, and subtle costal facets can be expected at the posterolateral body for the head of the rib and on the transverse process for the tubercle. Alignment is clear. Midline symmetry helps orient left versus right. Clinically, T7 sits near the apex of the thoracic kyphosis and is a common reference level when counting vertebrae on radiographs and CT, so an accurate anterior bony silhouette matters when teaching segmental identification. The costovertebral and costotransverse joints at this level explain why thoracic pain can track along an intercostal distribution, and why rib fractures or costotransverse arthritis may mimic vertebral pathology. This view also supports discussion of vertebral body compression fractures and metastatic lesions, which often declare themselves as anterior height loss or cortical irregularity before posterior element involvement becomes obvious. In an anatomy lab manual or musculoskeletal block lecture, the illustration works well for introducing typical thoracic vertebral features and their relationship to ribs, intervertebral discs, and the thoracic spinal canal.
