Description
Presented in lateral profile, the eighth thoracic vertebra (T8) sits within the mid thoracic kyphosis between T7 superiorly and T9 inferiorly, separated by the intervening intervertebral discs. The vertebral body occupies the anterior aspect, while the pedicle and lamina form the posterior vertebral arch that continues to the spinous process, which angles posteriorly and inferiorly in typical thoracic fashion. Along the posterolateral margin, the superior and inferior vertebral notches contribute to the intervertebral foramen, and the superior costal facet on the vertebral body marks the articulation for the head of a rib. Transverse and articular processes project posteriorly, providing attachment and joint surfaces that constrain thoracic motion. A lateral view at T8 is the cleanest way to teach how bony landmarks create the intervertebral opening for the segmental spinal nerve and radicular vessels, a relationship that matters when foraminal stenosis occurs from osteophytes or disc height loss. At this level, the rib-bearing facets also orient the learner to thoracic-specific anatomy, separating true thoracic vertebrae from cervical and lumbar patterns. Small changes in disc height at T7 to T8 or T8 to T9 can visibly narrow the foramen. It is a reliable teaching point.
