Description
Positioned in lateral profile within the mid thoracic spine, the T8 vertebra sits between T7 superiorly and T9 inferiorly, separated by the intervertebral discs and aligned along the physiologic thoracic kyphosis. The vertebral body lies anterior to the vertebral arch, while the pedicles and laminae sweep posteriorly to form the vertebral foramen, terminating in an inferiorly sloping spinous process typical of the thoracic region. From the vertebral arch, the superior and inferior articular processes stack in a shingle-like arrangement, and the transverse process projects laterally toward the rib-bearing costotransverse articulation expected at this level. Overlapping laminae stand out. That laminar overlap and the steep spinous processes matter when you teach or plan posterior access to the thoracic canal, because the interlaminar windows are narrower than in the cervical or lumbar spine. At T8, degenerative facet arthropathy or a thoracic disc herniation can contribute to canal compromise, and the lateral view helps clarify how the posterior elements can encroach on the spinal canal even when vertebral body height appears preserved. Surgeons doing thoracic laminectomy or posterior instrumentation rely on this geometry for safe trajectory and adequate decompression.
