Description
Sagittal section through the female breast and anterior thoracic wall reveals the mammary gland embedded in superficial fascia, with lobules and branching lactiferous ducts coursing anteriorly toward the nipple-areolar complex. Adipose tissue occupies the superficial and deep compartments, while fibrous septa (suspensory ligaments of the breast) run from dermis toward the pectoral fascia. A localized hematoma appears as a confined collection of extravasated blood within the parenchyma and fat, bounded by compressed glandular tissue, with adjacent small arteries and veins displaced rather than transected. Blood pools here. Breast hematoma is a common sequel of blunt trauma, postoperative dead space, or needle procedures such as core biopsy, and its appearance can overlap clinically with a palpable mass and skin discoloration. On ultrasound it often evolves from echogenic clot to a complex cystic lesion, while mammography may show a circumscribed density or, later, fat necrosis with calcifications that can mimic malignancy; appreciating the relationship to ducts, lobules, and Cooper ligaments helps explain why distortion and tethering can persist. Surgical planning also benefits from this sectional anatomy, since expanding hematoma under anticoagulation can track along fascial planes toward the retromammary space and chest wall. Ideal for breast anatomy teaching in gross anatomy and radiologic anatomy courses, and for patient-facing education in breast clinics explaining post-traumatic or post-biopsy lump formation.
