Description
Presented in a left anterolateral three-quarter view, the cranium is shown without the mandible, leaving the maxillae with their alveolar processes and the dental arches as the inferior boundary of the face. The zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch define the lateral cheek contour, while the nasal bones and piriform aperture frame the anterior nasal cavity, with the orbits positioned superiorly and laterally beneath the frontal bone. Posterior to the zygomatic arch, the temporal bone contributes the mandibular (glenoid) fossa and articular tubercle, now unobstructed in the absence of the condylar process. Coronal, sagittal, and lambdoid sutures remain readable across the calvaria. No jaw. Removing the mandible makes the temporomandibular joint landmarks easier to teach, because you can isolate the relationship between the mandibular fossa, articular eminence, and external acoustic meatus without the condyle hiding the joint surface. This is the perspective often referenced when explaining anterior TMJ dislocation, where the mandibular condyle rides anterior to the articular tubercle, and when orienting a preauricular surgical approach that must respect the superficial temporal vessels and the course of the facial nerve in the parotid region. The exposed maxillary dentition also helps distinguish maxillary versus mandibular tooth rows in trauma or dental charting illustrations. Use this asset in gross anatomy and head and neck anatomy courses, in dental education materials covering occlusion and TMJ mechanics, or in clinical publications discussing mandibular fracture patterns, TMJ dislocation reduction, or temporomandibular arthroscopy landmarks.
