Description
Medial aspect of the human navicular (os naviculare) is presented in isolation, oriented to the medial column of the midfoot. The navicular tuberosity projects medially and slightly plantar, forming the palpable bony prominence just anterior to the medial malleolus region when traced distally along the talar head. Superiorly and posteriorly, the concave proximal articular surface relates to the talar head, while the distal surface is directed toward the three cuneiforms (and, variably, the cuboid laterally); the plantar surface provides a groove for the tendon of tibialis posterior as it courses toward its main insertion. Emphasis on the tuberosity makes this view useful for understanding medial midfoot pain patterns and the mechanics of the longitudinal arch. Tibialis posterior dysfunction often localizes tenderness and swelling around the navicular tuberosity, and an accessory navicular (os tibiale externum) at this site can become symptomatic with overuse or footwear pressure, complicating evaluation of flexible flatfoot. Clear delineation of the medial contour also supports discussions of navicular stress injury and the vascular “watershed” considerations that influence healing, even though the fracture line itself is not the focus.
