Description
Rendered from the plantar aspect, the navicular (tarsal scaphoid) is isolated in relation to the medial column of the foot, with its concave posterior articular surface directed proximally toward the head of the talus and its distal facets oriented toward the three cuneiforms. Medially, the navicular tuberosity projects inferiorly and medially, forming a palpable prominence on the inner border of the foot just anterior to the talar head. Laterally, the bone tapers toward its smaller lateral surface, where an accessory facet for the cuboid may be present in some individuals. Surrounding tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges establish context for the longitudinal arch. A key landmark. Emphasis on the inferior surface and tuberosity matters because this is the attachment site for the tibialis posterior tendon, whose plantar pull supports the medial longitudinal arch and controls hindfoot valgus during stance. Loss of tendon function, from tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction or rupture, shifts load across the talonavicular joint and commonly produces acquired flatfoot deformity with medial midfoot pain near the navicular tuberosity. This relationship also guides assessment of accessory navicular syndrome, where an enlarged tuberosity or accessory ossicle becomes symptomatic under tendon traction or shoe pressure. Use this plate when teaching foot osteology and arch mechanics in gross anatomy, podiatry, and orthopaedic modules, or when illustrating the talonavicular complex in atlases, surgical texts, and patient education on adult acquired flatfoot and accessory navicular management. It also pairs well with ultrasound or MRI discussions of tibialis posterior insertional pathology and preoperative planning for medial midfoot procedures.
