Description
Viewed from below, the mandible presents a U-shaped body with a smoothly curving inferior border extending between the right and left angles (anguli mandibulae). Posteriorly, each ramus ascends from the angle toward the condylar process and coronoid process, separated by the mandibular notch, with the condylar heads positioned posterolateral to the symphyseal region. Along the inferior aspect of the body, the digastric fossae lie near the midline on the lingual surface, while the gonial regions broaden laterally at the junction of body and ramus. Orientation is unambiguous. An inferior perspective clarifies landmarks used in maxillofacial trauma assessment, where angle and body fractures can be correlated with occlusal disturbance and step deformity along the lower border.
