Description
Running subcutaneously along the dorsolateral hand and radial aspect of the forearm, the cephalic vein is traced proximally as it approaches the lateral border of the biceps brachii and the deltoid region on the posterior aspect of the upper limb. Smaller dorsal digital veins and venules converge at the wrist to form the dorsal venous network before feeding the cephalic trunk. Medially, the basilic vein and a connecting median cubital vein at the cubital fossa provide the familiar superficial venous triangle for upper-limb drainage and access. Posterior emphasis helps clarify how the cephalic vein relates to the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (terminal branch of the musculocutaneous nerve) as both travel in the superficial fascia, a relationship that explains why venipuncture or cannulation near the radial forearm can produce sharp, radiating paresthesia. At the shoulder, the cephalic course toward the deltopectoral groove sets up an anatomic rationale for cephalic vein cutdown and for catheter passage into the axillary and subclavian venous system. A practical surface landmark. This angle also reinforces why cephalic access can fail when the vein is small, duplicated, or angulated near its proximal junction, complicating guidewire advancement. Ideal for gross anatomy lab teaching on superficial veins of the upper limb, vascular access chapters in nursing and paramedic manuals, and surgical education materials on cephalic cutdown, pacemaker lead access routes, and avoidance of cutaneous nerve injury.
