Description
Seen from a superior perspective, the visceral surface of the male liver is rendered with the hepatic artery system traced to the cystic artery as it courses toward the gallbladder fossa on the inferior aspect of the right lobe. Proximally, the cystic artery is shown arising from the right hepatic artery within the hepatocystic triangle (Calot triangle), running anterolaterally before dividing into superficial and deep branches along the gallbladder wall. Adjacent vascular anatomy includes the portal venous inflow at the porta hepatis and hepatic venous outflow converging toward the suprahepatic inferior vena cava. Small-caliber arterioles and accompanying veins highlight the fine vascular scale. This angle matters when you are teaching or planning around cholecystectomy anatomy, where early identification and controlled division of the cystic artery prevents hemorrhage and avoids thermal or clip injury to the right hepatic artery. Variant origins are common, including a cystic artery arising from the common hepatic, proper hepatic, or even the gastroduodenal artery, and a superior view helps clarify how an aberrant course can cross anterior to the common hepatic duct or run close to the cystic duct. Bleeding in Calot triangle is unforgiving.
