Description
Seen from the medial aspect of the male knee, the superior medial genicular artery courses transversely along the medial femoral condyle just proximal to the joint line, then curves anteriorly toward the peripatellar anastomotic network. Branching arterioles track in the pericapsular connective tissue, with companion veins running parallel for venous return. Superiorly the vessel lies deep to the distal vastus medialis region and adjacent fascia, while inferiorly it relates to the medial capsule and the superior margin of the medial tibial plateau and meniscal region. Fine relationships matter here. Surgeons care about this artery because it defines a reliable vascular corridor around the medial joint line that can be injured during medial arthrotomy, meniscal surgery, or exposure for high tibial osteotomy. Its contribution to the genicular anastomosis becomes clinically relevant when femoropopliteal flow is compromised, and hypertrophied genicular branches can supply collateral circulation that interventionalists target during genicular artery embolization for knee osteoarthritis pain.
