Shown in lateral profile, the superior lateral genicular artery branches from the popliteal artery posterior to the distal femur and sweeps anteriorly in a semicircular course toward the lateral femoral condyle. Its trajectory hugs the periosteal surface superior to the lateral epicondyle, then tracks toward the lateral aspect of the patella where it contributes to the periarticular genicular anastomosis. Nearby, the popliteal artery continues inferiorly into the anterior and posterior tibial arteries, while the femoral artery lies proximal and anterior as it transitions through the adductor hiatus to become popliteal. Superficial venous channels, including the great saphenous vein along the medial leg and tributaries around the knee, provide contrast to the deeper arterial plane.
