Description
Arcing along the superolateral margin of the knee, the superior lateral genicular artery branches from the popliteal artery in the posterior knee and wraps laterally across the distal femur, running deep to the iliotibial tract and adjacent to the lateral femoral condyle. Its course carries it superior to the lateral meniscus and lateral tibial plateau, where it contributes to the periarticular genicular anastomosis with the inferior lateral genicular and descending branches from the thigh. Posteriorly, the popliteal artery and popliteal vein lie close together within the popliteal fossa, with smaller paired venous channels tracking the arterial branches. Color coding distinguishes arterial inflow from venous return. Appreciating this looping vessel matters when planning lateral approaches around the distal femur and knee, where the superior lateral genicular artery becomes a predictable source of bleeding during arthrotomy, distal femoral osteotomy, or exposure of the lateral femoral condyle.
