Description
Sweeping from a superior viewpoint across the bony pelvic ring, the animation centers on the pecten pubis (pectineal line) along the superior ramus of the pubis, forming the anterior segment of the pelvic brim. As the perspective subtly rotates, the pectineal line is read in continuity with the arcuate line of the ilium laterally and the pubic crest and pubic tubercle medially, clarifying the transition from iliopectineal eminence to the symphyseal region. Adjacent landmarks of the hip bone appear in proper relation, with the acetabulum positioned inferolaterally and the obturator foramen opening inferior to the superior pubic ramus. Orientation is unambiguous. That ridge matters because it is both a boundary and a tether point. The sequence makes the pelvic inlet line easy to trace, a frequent sticking point when teaching the obstetric conjugates and the distinction between true pelvis and false pelvis. Clinically, the pecten pubis anchors the pectineal (Cooper) ligament, a structure encountered in open and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair where mesh fixation and dissection near the superior pubic ramus can place the corona mortis at risk. Use this animation in gross anatomy lab instruction on the pelvis, in orthopaedic and general surgery teaching files to orient approaches to the pubic ramus, or in medical publishing when illustrating pelvic brim anatomy and the iliopectineal line as a palpable landmark on skeletal models. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
