Description
Arising from the pubic body, the superior pubic ramus sweeps posterolaterally toward the acetabular region, forming the anterior portion of the pelvic brim and the superior border of the obturator foramen. As the camera advances along the ramus, the pecten pubis (pectineal line) comes into relief on its superior surface, while the inferior margin drops toward the obturator groove and membrane attachment. Medially, the pubic crest and pubic tubercle define the anterior edge of the symphyseal region; laterally, the ramus thickens as it approaches the iliopectineal eminence at the pubis and ilium junction. Surface landmarks stay in motion relative to a fixed pelvic ring, making the curvature and changing cross section easy to read. Orthopedic and pelvic trauma teaching often treats the pubis as a flat bar, but the superior pubic ramus is a common fracture site in low energy falls and high energy pelvic ring disruptions, and its relationship to the obturator canal matters when fracture lines propagate toward the obturator neurovascular bundle. The animation clarifies why screw trajectories for anterior column fixation (and the classic “LC-1” injury pattern) depend on recognizing the pectineal line as a bony guide and appreciating the ramus’ twist from the symphysis toward the acetabulum. Small shape changes matter. Use this sequence in gross anatomy, musculoskeletal radiology correlation (AP pelvis, inlet and outlet views), and preoperative planning modules that introduce percutaneous superior pubic ramus and anterior column fixation, as well as in patient education for pubic ramus fractures after falls. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
