Description

Inferior pubic ramus extends inferolaterally from the body of the pubis, tapering as it approaches the ischial ramus to form the conjoined ischiopubic ramus. From an anterior pelvic perspective, it sits inferior to the pubic crest and pecten pubis, lateral to the pubic symphysis, and medial to the obturator foramen, where it contributes to the anteroinferior margin of that aperture. Its inferior border defines part of the pubic arch (subpubic angle), while the external surface remains continuous with the adjacent pubic body superiorly and the ischium posteroinferiorly. Bone landmarks matter here. This region is a frequent point of reference in pelvic ring trauma and in overuse injuries, because inferior pubic ramus fractures can present with groin pain and are often evaluated on AP pelvis and inlet and outlet radiographs or pelvic CT, where cortical disruption along the ischiopubic ramus can be subtle. The close relationship to the obturator foramen also frames discussion of the obturator neurovascular bundle as it traverses the obturator canal at the superior margin of the foramen, a contrast that helps learners separate canal anatomy from the ramus forming the inferior border. Surface anatomy ties directly to function, as the inferior pubic ramus provides attachment for gracilis and portions of adductor brevis and adductor magnus near the anterior margin, and it also anchors the perineal membrane along the ischiopubic rami in urogenital diaphragm anatomy. Use this illustration for pelvic osteology labs, sports medicine teaching on pubic ramus stress fractures, and operative anatomy figures in orthopedic trauma, urology, and urogynecology publications where the pubic arch and obturator foramen boundaries must be named precisely.
