Description
Anterior superficial myology of an adult female is presented from the head through the upper limbs, with the frontalis over the frontal bone, temporalis in the temporal fossa, and masseter spanning the zygomatic arch to the mandibular ramus. Inferior to the mandible, the platysma forms a thin sheet over the anterolateral neck while the sternocleidomastoid runs obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, flanking the midline. Across the thorax, pectoralis major sweeps from the sternum and clavicle to the proximal humerus, bordered laterally by the deltoid over the shoulder; the rectus abdominis lies vertically on either side of the linea alba with external oblique fibers coursing inferomedially, and intercostal muscle slips occupy the spaces between ribs. In the arm, biceps brachii sits anterior to the humerus and triceps brachii fills the posterior compartment, with brachioradialis prominent along the lateral forearm. Bony landmarks such as clavicle, scapula, ribs, humerus, radius, and ulna remain partially visible for orientation. Clear landmarks. For teaching surface anatomy, this combination of muscle bellies, tendons, and palpable osseous references helps you map functional compartments to the body wall, from mastication and facial expression to shoulder abduction, elbow flexion, and forearm positioning. The sternocleidomastoid is an immediate clinical landmark because it overlies the carotid sheath, defines the triangles of the neck, and guides central venous access attempts at the internal jugular vein. Shoulder and upper arm contours also matter in practice, where deltoid bulk and the bicipital region are assessed after trauma, in brachial plexus stretch injuries, and when planning intramuscular injection sites away from the axillary neurovascular bundle. Ideal applications include undergraduate anatomy and myology courses, clinical skills sessions on inspection and palpation, and figure plates for textbooks covering the anterior trunk, head and neck, and upper limb compartments.
