Description

Presented in lateral profile, the adult female muscular system is rendered with superficial myology in red and select deeper muscle fibers and bony contours in white for orientation. Along the head and neck, the masseter sits over the mandibular ramus while the sternocleidomastoid runs inferoanteriorly from the mastoid process to the manubrium and clavicle, framing the lateral cervical region. Inferior to the clavicle the deltoid caps the glenohumeral joint, with biceps brachii anterior to the humerus and triceps brachii occupying the posterior arm, and distally the extensor and flexor compartments of the forearm taper into tendons crossing the wrist. Over the trunk, serratus anterior interdigitates with the external oblique on the lateral thoracic wall, intercostal muscles occupy the rib spaces, and rectus abdominis lies anteromedially, while in the lower limb the quadriceps group forms the anterior thigh opposite the hamstrings posteriorly, and gastrocnemius and soleus define the posterior calf to the calcaneal tendon. A lateral view makes the relationship between muscular bulk and palpable landmarks easier to teach: acromion, greater trochanter, lateral femoral epicondyle, and calcaneus. It also highlights classic overuse patterns, such as iliotibial band friction over the lateral femoral condyle in runners and Achilles tendinopathy at the posterior ankle, where tendon fibers are stressed by repetitive plantarflexion. For procedural anatomy, the contour of the deltoid and gluteal region supports safer intramuscular injection planning by keeping clear of the axillary nerve and superior gluteal neurovascular bundle, even when only surface anatomy is available. Clean landmarks matter. Use this plate in gross anatomy labs, kinesiology and sports medicine lectures, and medical publisher figure programs that need a whole-body reference for major muscles and tendons in a woman. It also works well for patient-facing rehabilitation handouts when paired with simplified labels. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
