Description
Positioned on the anterior thoracic wall, the paired pectoralis minor muscles appear as thin, triangular slips deep to pectoralis major, spanning from the costal surfaces of ribs 3 to 5 near their costochondral junctions to the medial border and superior surface of the coracoid process of the scapula. Each muscle runs superolaterally from its rib origins toward the shoulder girdle, lying anterior to the ribs and intercostal spaces and inferior to the clavicle. On the full-body frontal skeleton, the sternum and rib cage frame the muscle medially, while the scapulae and proximal humeri sit lateral and slightly posterior to its insertion point. An anterior full-body perspective clarifies how pectoralis minor links the chest wall to the coracoid, a relationship that can be hard to teach when the scapula is viewed only from behind. Clinically, hypertrophy, spasm, or postural shortening of pectoralis minor can anteriorly tilt and protract the scapula and narrow the space beneath the coracoid, a setup often discussed in pectoralis minor syndrome and some presentations of thoracic outlet-type neurovascular compression. The coracoid insertion is also a surgical landmark during deltopectoral approaches and coracoid procedures, where respecting the muscle’s attachment helps orient dissection in the anterior shoulder. Use this plate in gross anatomy and kinesiology courses to introduce scapulothoracic mechanics, and in sports medicine or physical therapy materials that explain rounded-shoulder posture and anterior shoulder pain patterns.
