Description
Across the anterior thorax, the pectoralis minor appears deep to pectoralis major, with three slender fascicles arising from the anterolateral surfaces of ribs 3 to 5 near their costal cartilages and converging superolaterally toward the coracoid process of the scapula. Lateral to these slips, the serratus anterior is emphasized along the lateral rib cage, its digitations interleaving with the external oblique inferiorly and passing posterior to the scapula. Pectoralis major spans the anterior chest wall superficially, while the anterior deltoid and proximal brachium frame the shoulder region. Layering is the point. Functionally, this anterior perspective clarifies how pectoralis minor can tilt the scapula anteriorly and draw it medially and inferiorly, opposing serratus anterior driven upward rotation during overhead elevation. That relationship matters in scapular dyskinesis and shoulder impingement patterns, where a short, overactive pectoralis minor contributes to anterior tilt and reduced subacromial clearance.
