Description
Viewed in lateral profile on an adult male, the pectoralis minor is shown as a thin, triangular muscle deep to pectoralis major and anterior to the thoracic wall, its fascicles running superolaterally from the anterior ribs (classically ribs 3 to 5) toward the coracoid process of the scapula. Superficial landmarks include the anterior deltoid at the shoulder, with the clavicular and sternocostal portions of pectoralis major forming the anterior chest contour overlying the deeper plane. Serratus anterior digitations appear along the lateral thorax, and the biceps brachii and triceps brachii frame the proximal arm to clarify shoulder orientation. Depth is the point. Pectoralis minor matters because it is the anterior tether of the scapula, and tightness or hypertrophy can drive scapular anterior tilt and protraction, a common contributor to subacromial impingement patterns during overhead activity. The lateral perspective also clarifies its relationship to the axillary neurovascular bundle, the cords of the brachial plexus and axillary artery lie deep and superior to the muscle near the coracoid, a practical reference when teaching pectoral blocks (PECS I and II) and when discussing neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome under the pectoralis minor (subcoracoid) space.
