Description
Beneath a partially transparent anterior thoracic skin envelope, the pectoralis major dominates the superficial chest wall bilaterally, its fibers converging laterally toward the proximal humerus. Deep to pectoralis major, the pectoralis minor is inferred as a thinner triangular muscle coursing superolaterally from the anterior surfaces of ribs 3 to 5 toward the coracoid process of the scapula, lying anterior to the upper ribs and intercostal spaces. Medially, the sternal region and costal cartilages form the central thoracic landmark, while laterally the axillary fold region frames the transition toward the shoulder girdle. Fiber direction is clear. Understanding the pectoralis minor in relation to the overlying pectoralis major matters when teaching layered chest anatomy and when planning approaches that traverse the anterior axilla, including deltopectoral access and pacemaker or port placement near the cephalic vein groove. Tightness or hypertrophy of pectoralis minor can contribute to neurovascular symptoms by narrowing the space deep to it, a recognized component of thoracic outlet syndrome (pectoralis minor syndrome) where the brachial plexus cords and axillary vessels are vulnerable during scapular protraction.
