Pectoralis Minor Beneath the Skin, Anterior View

Positioned deep to pectoralis major, the pectoralis minor appears as a thin, triangular muscle on the anterior thoracic wall, its fibers (fascicles) running superolaterally from the anterior surfaces of ribs 3 to 5 near their costal cartilages to the medial border and superior surface of the coracoid process of the scapula. Medially, the muscle approaches the parasternal region, while laterally it points toward the axilla and the coracoid. Superficial tissues and skin remain intact to orient the viewer to surface anatomy. Small but decisive. Functionally, pectoralis minor is a primary anterior stabilizer of the scapula, drawing it anteriorly and inferiorly against the thoracic wall and contributing to downward rotation. Its relationship to the brachial plexus cords and the axillary artery, which lie deep and slightly superior-lateral to the muscle near the coracoid, makes it a frequent suspect in pectoralis minor syndrome (a neurovascular compression pattern sometimes grouped under thoracic outlet syndromes). Tightness can also drive scapular anterior tilt and protraction, a common finding in shoulder impingement mechanics and in patients with postural pain across the anterior chest. Use this anterior male torso view in undergraduate gross anatomy or kinesiology courses when teaching layered pectoral anatomy and scapulothoracic motion, and in physical therapy materials discussing scapular dyskinesis, stretching, and manual release techniques. It also suits clinical references that need a clear, surface-oriented orientation to deep pectoral structures before introducing the clavipectoral fascia and axillary contents.
