Description
Anteriorly, the paired basal ganglia are presented deep to the frontal lobes of the cerebrum, with the caudate nucleus forming its characteristic C-shaped arc as it courses superiorly and laterally along the wall of the lateral ventricle. Medial to the lentiform complex, the thalamus appears centrally as a bilateral ovoid mass, with the hypothalamus positioned inferior to it in the midline. Inferior and anterior to the diencephalon, the optic chiasm spans transversely, while the brainstem descends in the midline with the midbrain superior to the pons and medulla. Orientation matters here because an anterior perspective lets you teach and recognize deep gray relationships without the visual clutter of a lateral cortical surface. The caudate’s curvature and its proximity to the thalamus are key landmarks when discussing basal ganglia circuits implicated in Parkinson disease and Huntington disease, and they also frame how involuntary movements can arise from selective degeneration within these nuclei.
