Description

Frontal exposure of the male telencephalon centers the basal ganglia deep to the cerebral cortex, with the caudate nucleus sweeping superiorly and laterally along the anterior horn region while remaining medial to the lentiform nucleus. The lenticular (lentiform) nucleus, formed by putamen laterally and globus pallidus medially, sits lateral to the internal capsule and anterior to the thalamus. Inferiorly, the optic chiasm lies in the midline beneath the diencephalon, and the brainstem descends posterior and inferior to the thalamic level; a sliver of cerebellum is visible posteroinferior to the brainstem. Sulci and gyri frame the deeper nuclei by surface landmarks only. An anterior view is the cleanest way to teach how the caudate and lentiform nuclei “bookend” the internal capsule, the corridor that carries corticospinal and thalamocortical fibers and becomes a key anatomic boundary in lacunar infarcts and hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage. Spatially, it also reinforces why lesions affecting the striatum (caudate and putamen) versus pallidum produce different movement disorders, and how basal ganglia circuitry relates to Parkinson disease and Huntington disease patterns. Keep the optic chiasm in mind. Sellar and suprasellar masses can compress it from below, and the midline relationship helps correlate bitemporal hemianopia with adjacent deep gray anatomy. Use this artwork in neuroanatomy blocks, gross anatomy lab guides, and neurology or neurosurgery teaching decks when you need a frontal reference for basal ganglia, thalamus, and internal capsule relationships before moving to axial MRI or coronal CT correlation.
