Corpus Callosum, Anterior View

Description

Anterior orientation places the frontal poles of the cerebral hemispheres laterally, with the interhemispheric fissure in the midline and the medial surfaces implied behind the cortical gyri and sulci. Deep to the cingulate region, the corpus callosum is presented at its anterior curvature, with the genu arching forward and inferiorly into the rostrum, continuous posteriorly with the callosal body (truncus). Inferior midline structures align beneath it, including the optic nerves converging at the optic chiasm and the proximal brainstem descending toward the spinal cord, providing clear superior to inferior relationships from telencephalon to diencephalon and mesencephalon. This anterior callosal emphasis matters when teaching commissural anatomy and midline malformations, because agenesis or dysgenesis of the corpus callosum most visibly alters the genu and rostrum and changes the shape of the lateral ventricles and pericallosal cistern on MRI. Surgical and procedural planning also benefits from this perspective: interhemispheric approaches for anterior communicating artery aneurysms and corpus callosotomy for refractory epilepsy both depend on understanding the callosal curvature and its proximity to the septal region and basal forebrain. Midline equals high consequence.
