Description
Running in an anterior view from the lower neck to the cranial vault, the paired common carotid arteries ascend lateral to the trachea and laryngeal framework, then bifurcate at the level of the superior border of the thyroid cartilage into internal and external carotid arteries. Superficial branches of the external carotid system course over familiar bony landmarks, with the facial artery winding across the mandible near the masseter, the superficial temporal artery tracking superior to the zygomatic arch, and the maxillary artery contributing to the deep facial and nasal supply. Venous drainage parallels this layout, with the internal jugular veins descending deep within the carotid sheaths and the external jugular veins more superficial, while the facial vein and superficial temporal vein converge toward the retromandibular region. Bone context includes the frontal bone, nasal bones, zygomatic bones, maxilla, mandible, and dentition. An anterior vascular map of the male face and cranium helps you teach where bleeding occurs and where vessels can be controlled. The facial artery at the inferior border of the mandible is a classic pulse point and a practical compression site in facial trauma, while the superficial temporal artery is a common target for palpation and for biopsy in suspected giant cell arteritis. Venous connections in the midface also matter clinically, because facial and angular veins communicate with the superior ophthalmic vein and cavernous sinus, framing the pathway for septic cavernous sinus thrombosis from infections in the so called danger triangle. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy teaching, dental and maxillofacial surgery materials, ENT and ophthalmology texts, and emergency medicine training on facial lacerations and vascular control, where clear relationships to the cranium and mandible support procedural planning.
